Staying Safe After a Flat Tyre or Blowout
A flat tyre emergency is one of the most stressful situations any driver can face, particularly on a busy road or motorway. Knowing what to do immediately can make the difference between a minor inconvenience and a dangerous accident. The most important first step is to stay calm — do not brake sharply or swerve.
If you experience a blowout at speed, hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands, ease off the accelerator gradually, and gently steer to safety. Switch on your hazard warning lights immediately. If you're on a motorway, aim for the hard shoulder or the nearest emergency refuge area. If in a town or city, pull to the nearest safe spot away from traffic.
What to Do After Pulling Over
Once safely stopped, switch your hazard lights on if not already done. If you have a high-visibility vest, put it on before exiting the vehicle. Place a warning triangle at least 45 metres behind your car on regular roads — do NOT use warning triangles on motorways. Keep all passengers away from the road and behind the crash barriers if on a motorway.
Do not attempt to change a tyre yourself on a motorway hard shoulder — it is extremely dangerous. Call our emergency mobile tyre fitting service instead. Our technicians are trained for roadside tyre changes and have the correct safety equipment to work near moving traffic.
