The first rule of choosing tyres is getting the right size for your vehicle. Never fit a different size from what's specified — it affects speedometer accuracy, handling, clearances, and can invalidate your insurance. Your correct tyre size is printed on the sidewall of your current tyres (e.g., 205/55 R16) and in your owner's manual. EU Tyre Label: What to Look For
All new tyres sold in the UK carry an EU Tyre Label showing three key ratings: fuel efficiency (A–E), wet grip (A–E), and noise level (in decibels). Prioritise an A or B rating for wet grip — this directly affects how quickly you stop in rain. Fuel efficiency rating affects your running costs over the life of the tyre. Both ratings are worth paying attention to when comparing similarly priced tyres.
