Run-Flat Tyres Explained: Are They Worth It?

Run-flat tyres allow you to drive after a puncture. But are they right for your car? We explain how they work and the pros and cons.

How Do Run-Flat Tyres Work?

Run-flat tyres (RFTs) are designed with reinforced sidewalls that can support the weight of the vehicle even when the tyre has zero air pressure. The reinforced sidewall typically uses a hard rubber insert that prevents the tyre from collapsing under load. Most run-flat tyres can be driven at up to 50mph for up to 50 miles after a puncture — enough to reach a tyre fitter without needing to stop at the roadside.

Run-flat tyres are fitted as standard to many BMW, Mini, and some Mercedes models, as well as various other prestige vehicles. These cars often do not come with a spare wheel or space-saver — the run-flat is the contingency plan. If your vehicle was originally fitted with run-flats and has no spare, replacing with standard tyres requires you to also fit a spare wheel kit.

Pros of Run-Flat Tyres

The main advantage is safety and convenience after a puncture. You can drive calmly to a tyre fitter rather than stopping on a dangerous roadside. There's also no need to change a wheel at the roadside, which is particularly valuable for drivers travelling alone or in remote areas. The removal of the spare wheel also saves vehicle weight and increases boot space.

Cons of Run-Flat Tyres

Run-flat tyres are significantly more expensive than standard equivalents — often 30–50% more. They are stiffer due to the reinforced sidewall, which can result in a harsher ride on cars without adaptive suspension. They cannot be repaired after a puncture — even if the damage is minor and repairable on a standard tyre — because internal damage from running flat is impossible to fully assess. This makes every puncture a guaranteed tyre replacement.
